Arco - with the bow
I have spent a lot of my life with a bow in hand.
At age 5 I lived with my family in Arnhem Land and I pleaded with my parents, “Let me play the violin!” Somehow they found a way to make it happen in remote Gunbalanya. I played my way through my schooling years, enjoying some of the excellent music programs provided by the Centre for Youth Music at the Charles Darwin University and gigging with some wonderful musicians in Darwin. I also managed to play with the DSO for a while before moving to Sydney in 2012 to study Commerce and Arts at the University of Sydney. Though not playing with an orchestra at this time, I had some wonderful practical subjects as part of my music major and I also played with an Indie Rock band.
After studying I worked in Human Resource Management, continuing to play by joining the NSSO for a short while and making music with my church band.
I found my way to luthiery in 2020 when I began working at the Sydney String Centre. It wasn’t long before I began to pursue an archetier specialty, with this gaining momentum when I undertook some training with Finnish bow maker, Lauri Tanner at the start of 2024.
Over the last three years I have carried out hundreds of rehairs on bows for all stringed instruments, ranging from student to fine bows and I have been building on my repertoire of restoration work.
In this time my husband and I have welcomed our two girls into our family and so it was that at the start of 2026 the four of us travelled to Germany so that I could undertake training in bow making. I spent time with the Dörfler workshop, Josef Gabriel and Gerald Knoll. And I also spent a week with the team at Arcus learning more about their process of carbon fibre bow making.
So with bow in hand, I am continually improving the quality of service that I provide to Australia’s string instrumentalists and instrument dealers whilst also navigating the changing landscape of bow making to find my place in it.
